SECFT represents the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in Spain.

Over the past years and in fulfillment of this obligation, SECFT has been present at the fifteen international conferences organised every two years by the ICA, and at the eight conventions organised every four years by the ISPRS. At the same time, SECFT has represented our cartographic sector at the General Meetings of the ICA, and the photogrammetry and remote sensing sector at those of the ISPRS. The Society has sent a Report to each of these Meetings, detailing the activities carried out in Spain in relation with these subjects for the years prior to each of the aforementioned conferences and conventions.

A special mention is merited for the work the Society has done in organising the participation of Spanish cartography in the International Maps Exhibitions.

We should also point out that, in recent years, Spanish cartography has successfully won awards in several exhibitions held during the International Cartographic Conferences. This happened in 1995 in Barcelona (Spain), in 1999 in Ottawa (Canada), in 2003 in Durban (South Africa), and in 2005 in A Coruña (Spain). It has been highly gratifying to our Society to have promoted and contributed to the organisation of the Spanish participation in these exhibitions, as has been the recognition obtained from the juries, who have awarded prestigious prizes to our maps.

In 2006, the Society prepared a Report on Spanish cartographic activities during the 2003-2007 period for the General Meeting of the ICA taking place in Moscow, and also organised the cartographic documentation that represented Spain in the International Maps Exhibition, held alongside the 2007 International Cartographic Conference.

The Society’s bylaws were modified to comply with the Organic Law 1/2002, dated March 2002, on the Regulation of the Right of Association. The modification was approved at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 21st of November, 2006, with this sole item in the agenda.

The Society still participates actively in the Commission for Cartography and Children, which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. Constant contact is maintained with its Chairman, Patrick Wiegand (UK), as well as with Jesús Reyes (Hungary) and Ana María Garra (Argentina). The preliminary work for the Spanish participation in the Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map Competition has been started as well.

The Society collaborated in the sponsorship of a Seminar on Photogrammetry at the School of Geodesy and Cartography of Avila (Spain). In this Seminar, the curriculum for Photogrammetry and Geomatics in the European Union was reviewed in relation with the Declaration of Bologna. The Society proposed the collaboration of the ICA’s Secretary-General, Ferjan Ormeling, who is involved with the teaching of Geomatics and Cartography in several European universities.

The President of the Society sent a note of thanks to the Chief of the General Secretariat of His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias for having accepted the Honorary Presidency of the International Cartography Conference held in A Coruña in 2005. The Society has been honoured with an answer from HRH the Prince of Asturias, thanking us for this initiative.
